Pendle MP, Andrew Stephenson, has welcomed the news that Highways England have announced 100 miles of extra lanes will be added to the North West’s motorways.
The work that has been announced will see four new smart motorway schemes, due to be completed by spring 2020. The M62, M56 and two stretches of the M6 will all see extra lanes.
Smart motorways reduce congestion by using technology to monitor traffic and adjusting the speed limit, improving traffic flow and journey times.
Mr Stephenson said, “100 miles of extra lanes will make travel more efficient around our region, saving time and helping our economy. This will benefit motorists from Pendle on their journeys to and from different parts of the North West.”
Mike Bull, Highways England smart motorways Northern programme, said, “The North West’s new smart motorway routes will provide over 100 miles of extra lanes benefiting the hundreds of thousands of drivers who use our motorways every day for commuting, business and leisure.”
