Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has called for more people from a wider range of backgrounds to volunteer as school governors following a call from the Education Secretary, Damian Hinds MP, on business leaders to consider signing up.
The Education Secretary wrote to 30,000 members of the Institute of Directors, an organisation of business leaders, to ask them to consider taking on leadership roles at schools and colleges. He argued that business leaders joining school leadership teams will create stronger links between schools and businesses, providing better opportunities for students.
Both Mr Stephenson and Pendle Borough Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Deputy Leader of the Pendle Conservatives, serve as governors for Whitefield Infant School and Nursery. Leader of the Council, Councillor Paul White, serves as Chair of Governors at Laneshawbridge Primary School.
Mr Stephenson said, “Volunteering for a local school is one of the most rewarding activities that someone can participate in. Becoming a governor or trustee is a tremendous opportunity to help shape our next generation.”
Education Secretary Damian Hinds, said, “Governing and trust boards should reflect the communities they serve and for those in their community that want to give something back, this is truly one of the most valuable and far reaching ways to do so.”
