Andrew has welcome the introduction of new nationwide regulations which will help to protect private renters in Pendle.
The new rules mean that private landlords must ensure that those who conduct electrical safety inspections are properly qualified. Landlords who fail to do so will face heavy penalties.
Local councils will also gain new powers to impose banning orders and fines of up to £30,000 for landlords who rent out poor quality or unsafe properties.
“I welcome these new protections that will be of great benefit to private renters in Pendle, where we have more private renters than the national average.
“Safety should be of the utmost concern for all landlords, and it is encouraging to see more punitive measures being taken against the few who flout their responsibilities to their tenants.”
Minister for Housing and Homelessness Heather Wheeler MP said: “Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their own home.
“While measures are already in place to crack down on the small minority of landlords who rent out unsafe properties, we need to do more to protect tenants.”
These new rules come ahead of the implementation of the Tenant Fees Bill, which outlaws unnecessary fees imposed by landlords and will come into effect on 1 June 2019.
