Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has backed a new £3 million fund for creative community projects in the North of England after it was announced by the Prime Minister, Theresa May.
Mr Stephenson urged local organisations to apply as they may be eligible for up to £150,000 in funding. Examples of projects that could be successful include theatres working to improve child literacy, or art workshops for disabled people or the elderly.
The new fund builds on £150 million already invested by the Government as part of its Industrial Strategy deal for the creative industries.
It also follows the announcement earlier in the year that the government will commit £11 million through the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund to support major cultural projects. Both funds will help build a legacy for the Great Exhibition of the North that is being held in Newcastle this summer, showcasing the very best of art and design in the region.
Andrew Stephenson MP said, “This government has shown real commitment to the north and not just in traditional sectors such as manufacturing.
“We have a thriving set of creative industries in Pendle who can benefit from this new funding”.
The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Theresa May MP said, “Our creative industries are at the heart of what makes Britain great. From the big screen to the local gallery, our films captivate audiences the world over.
“I am delighted to announce a £3 million fund that will provide a new source of finance for creative and cultural organisations across the Northern Powerhouse.”
Arts Minister, Michael Ellis MP said: “Britain’s creative industries are an economic and cultural powerhouse that is recognised around the world.
“This new fund is another vote of confidence in the sector that will develop future talent, benefit communities and provide a lasting legacy from the Great Exhibition of the North.”
